The HPAI Vaccination Trial in Turkeys begins today, following recommendations from the UK joint industry, cross-government avian influenza vaccination taskforce (the Taskforce).
The Taskforce was established to explore vaccination of poultry as a preventative measure against HPAI in the UK, bringing together industry and government to address the ongoing impact of the disease.
Vaccination of poultry against HPAI is not currently permitted in the UK. This field trial, conducted under strict government oversight and normal husbandry conditions, represents an important step in assessing whether vaccination can form part of a workable, long-term disease control strategy.
The results will provide practical, real-world evidence on how vaccination could operate in UK production systems, helping to safeguard bird health, protect farm businesses, and strengthen the resilience of the British poultry sector.
“The start of this turkey vaccine trial marks an important milestone for our sector. Highly pathogenic avian influenza has placed enormous strain on producers, and we have been clear that sustainable, science-led solutions must be explored.
“The British turkey sector has been particularly affected in recent years. This trial will help ensure that any future policy decisions are grounded in robust field evidence and practical delivery considerations.
“We are committed to working collaboratively with government to protect bird health, maintain high welfare standards, and support the long-term viability of UK poultry production.”
