Meet… Lucy!

Bio: I’m Lucy! I’m 20 and am in my third year at Harper Adams University, where I’m studying for a degree in Agriculture. I’m currently on placement with Moy Park. When I am not studying, I’m skiing or helping out on my family farm.

Get to know Lucy…

I wanted to study at Harper because…

“the university has such a great name in the agriculture sector and is regularly published in the agricultural press. Everyone I spoke to who had been to Harper Adams University highly recommended it which cemented my choice. Harper Adams University also offered an excellent variety of poultry placements and scholarships.”

A piece of advice you’d give to a prospective Food Hero is…

“make sure you explore the industry by taking every opportunity, you can never have too much experience. Each farm does something differently.”

In 10 years I want to…

“well, I haven’t fully made my mind up yet – either managing our family’s free range layer farm or working for another larger business in the poultry sector. I know for sure I want to pursue my career in the poultry sector.”

One thing I would tell myself before I started Harper would be…

“make sure you make good use of the SU as time goes at a crazy rate! On a more serious note, make sure you tailor assignments to subject areas you are interested in as this forces you to use Harper Adams University’s excellent library resources to learn theory you can apply in practice.”

What I offer the industry is…

“a drive to shape the industry for the future. I am very dedicated and committed to the industry and have spent many hours conducting work experience – particularly around our free range layers to see the whole industry, from hatchery and rearing to packing and slaughter. I want to take every opportunity given to me to explore the industry I have such a passion for and have done for many years.”

What the industry offers me…

“great experiences. Everyone in the industry I have met so far shows such a passion and is so willing to let you learn. The industry offers many different careers.”

A typical day for me…

“quite hard to define. Moy Park are allowing me to experience a little bit of the whole business, which I really appreciate, so I am near enough doing a different job each day. I could be doing anything from farm duties to tipping chicks or water testing!”
