British Poultry Council outlines how poultry meat businesses must be able to deliver for all people so we can all deliver for the planet.

In its latest report, ‘2024 and Beyond,’ the British Poultry Council charts the course towards developing a new and healthy context for British food production.

“If poultry is half the meat the nation eats, then the path forward to ensure the sustainability of our food system must be clear. ‘2024 and Beyond’ sets out what that path looks like,” says Richard Griffiths, BPC Chief Executive.

‘2024 and Beyond’ proposes action towards solutions to the business-critical issues that have shaped this era of British food. In doing so, the report outlines a vision for British poultry meat and highlights the pivotal role that BPC member businesses play in a sustainable, equitable and robust food system, underscored by the Values that define the industry that is feeding the nation.

Our Great British Food Values encapsulate BPC members’ responsibility to feed people, tackle inequalities with safe and affordable food, and reduce inputs and impacts to promote a liveable climate for all.

The British poultry meat industry is integral to our national food security: we must continue to deliver for all people so we can all deliver for the planet. In this report, we outline the steps that must be taken to safeguard the availability, accessibility, and affordability of food, prioritise the viability of poultry meat businesses and secure the robustness of our supply chains into the future:

  • Safe, affordable, nutritious food for all
  • Smooth and fair trade keeps food moving
  • Managing avian influenza
  • A balance between welfare and the environment
  • A secure and skilled workforce

“Putting together ‘2024 and Beyond’ was our opportunity to move away from firefighting and to lay the groundwork for a new and healthy context for British food production,” Mr Griffiths continued.

“Tackling the challenges that continue to shape poultry meat production must be with the view of setting out the UK’s vision for food, its place in society and ambitions for a food system rooted in agility, confidence, and foresight. We are confident this report can provide the foundations to inspire such change.”
